Welcome to Source of Steel - The Heavy Metal Museum. For the metal head who likes to own or collect physical CDs, Source of Steel is my website dedicated to the love of physical metal on shiny plastic discs. Micro-reviews, thoughts, pics of my own collection and random utterances galore. The site started out purely as a way of sharing my rarities to like-minded fans, but now (for longevity's sake more than anything) it is open to new physical metal music bits I've picked up, including new releases and other random shit.

Monstrosity - Imperial Doom / Millennium

A classic of the death metal genre right here, Monstrosity's debut album Imperial Doom as an original Nuclear Blast pressing from 1992 and their second album Millennium from 1996 (also on Nuclear Blast). Monstrosity's quality went downhill after the loss of vocalist George Fisher to Cannibal Corpse in my opinion, but these albums stand head and shoulders above a large portion of others in terms of ferocity, catchiness and downright enjoyment stakes. A rare couple of albums which are worth the price they go on eBay for in my opinion!

Patriarch - Prophecy

The debut album from Belgian power/thrash group Patriarch here, released on Shark Records. This was released to little or no fanfare back in 1990, but to be fair it packs in some decent quality riffage into its just over 40 minute run time. Worth a look.

The Crucified - The Pillars of Humanity

The Crucified's 2nd (and final) album here. Never quite setting the world alight (Christian lyrics alert), their brand of crossover thrash was actually pretty aggressive for a crew of the indoctrinated. Worth a punt for fans of Suicidal Tendencies and Cro-Mags thrashier era etc. Ocean Records.

Infestdead - Killing Christ / Hellfuck

The early EP and debut album from one of Dan Swanö's many projects, Infestdead. This is hard hitting, powerfully produced, Christ-baiting death metal at it's most outlandish. Simplistic riffs and rhythms pound throughout, with sadistically roared vocals topping off the proceedings with glee. Both currently out of print. These are original pressings on Invasion Records.

Depression - Chronische Depression

The 10 year anniversary album from German death/grinders Depression, limited to 1,000 copies on Deadly Art Production. Features early tracks from their great number of demos and splits from the 90s, covers and original material.

Siege - Drop Dead

Mixing it up a little with some seminal hardcore punk. Siege influences ran wildly amongst not only the punk scene, but also into metal and grindcore (with the likes of Napalm Death being one of their biggest padowans). Spastic shards of riffage burst forth, feedback and anger is channeled and history is made, with 'Drop Dead' still standing to this day as one of the shining lights of the genre. An original pressing on CD by Relapse Records (as part of their Relapse Underground series).

Aborted ‎– The Purity Of Perversion

The debut album from Belgium's Aborted, in it's Belgian pressing on Soulreaper Records. The gore-filled first foray of Aborted sees their influences shine the brightest, aping Carcass and Impetigo to create a heaving death grinding monstrosity. More elements to their sound were to follow later in their career, but I still dig their style (particularly their last couple of efforts).

Living Death - Vengeance of Hell / Metal Revolution

The first two albums from German speed/thrashers Living Death. Their debut 'Vengeance of Hell' is the first CD pressing on Mausoleum Records Classix, and the 'Metal Revolution' is on ABS Classics. Decent thrash from the early/mid 80s (84 & 85 respectively), will bring a tear to the eyes of any old fogies like myself which miss the simpler days.

Gothic Slam - Just A Face In The Crowd

Gothic Slam reared their thrashy head in the mid-80s, recording two albums before dissolving in 1993. This is their 2nd album from 1989 on Epic Records, featuring some fair quality thrash - but nothing which will take your head off. Still, there's plenty for your average Bay Area thrasher to get off on. Worth a look.
