Welcome to Source of Steel - The Heavy Metal Museum. For the metal head who likes to own or collect physical CDs, Source of Steel is my website dedicated to the love of physical metal on shiny plastic discs. Micro-reviews, thoughts, pics of my own collection and random utterances galore. The site started out purely as a way of sharing my rarities to like-minded fans, but now (for longevity's sake more than anything) it is open to new physical metal music bits I've picked up, including new releases and other random shit.

Dead Head - The Feast Begins at Dawn / Dream Deceiver

Dutch thrashers Dead Head here with their debut and 2nd albums, from 1991 and 1993 respectively. Great, deathly thrash metal right here, arguably two of the bands finest efforts captured in plastic (as they're still kicking out the jams to this day with 5 albums under their belts, not to mention various demos and EPs). Can't beat the aggression and vibe of the early stuff can you? Both CDs are original pressings on Bad Taste Records, and currently out of print.

Blood - Christbait / O Agios Pethane

Here we have the 2nd and 3rd albums from German death/grind merchants Blood. Grunting, grinding gristly chunks aplenty here, as a malestrom of musical carnage hits you from the speakers. I think these guys actually got better as they went along, setting them apart from the "First albums the best" crowd. These are original pressings on the now defunct 1MF recordz.

Defiled - Erupted Wrath / Ugliness Revealed

Here are the first two albums from death metallers Defiled. For me, Japan is more known for its amazing black metal, not to mention a good spewing of trad metal - not so much top notch death metal though. However, Defiled are hateful, angry, blasting and detuned death metal just as it should be - great shit. Original pressings on Nightfall/Terrorizer & Baphomet Records respectively.

Meliah Rage - Kill to Survive

The amazing debut album of Meliah Rage here, a veritable feast of power metal infused speed/thrash with a rich vein of pure heavy metal running through it. Touches of Metal Church here and there to be heard which can never be a bad thing in my book. An original pressing on Epic Records.

Annihilator - Alice in Hell / Never Neverland / Set The World On Fire

Jeff Waters and his ever changing band of backing musicians here, with Annihilator's first three albums (their best three, in my opinion). Good shit right here, with some ripping thrash and awesome riffery - just a shame they could never seem to keep a regular stable line up. A lot of the stuff released after these three albums ranged from mediocre to poor, discounting their most recent self titled release which seemed to be much more of a return to form. Anyhow, these are all original pressings on Roadrunner records.

Obsecration - The Inheritors of Pain

One of the early Greek bands playing extreme metal, Obsecration were generally overlooked and got left by the wayside due to the likes of Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh and Necromantia hogging the limelight. There's some good stuff here on their debut album from 1996, so it's worth investigating if you've not come across the band before. An original pressing on Hammerheart Records.

Dragon - Fallen Angel

Here is the 2nd album from Polish death/thrashers Dragon. Personally my favourite out of the 3 albums of theirs which I've currently heard (the first three), these guys actually released five albums in total before calling it quits in 2000. They've recently reformed, but no new material has surfaced as yet. A strong album, well worth hunting down. Pictured is the early pressing on Music for Nations, but it was later re-issued on Digipak form by relentless Polish re-issuers Metal Mind.

Megace - Human Errors

Germany's Megace here, with their obscure debut album of weird technical, proggy thrashiness. Their sound is fairly unique, but lacks a real bite to keep it as a mainstayer in your stereo for more than a few listens (at least for me). These guys released a 2nd album in 1999 (hell of a gap from this, which came out in 1991!), but quickly went on to merge themselves from Megace into a much more progressive outfit called Step into Liquid. Odd name. An original pressing on the long defunct 1MF label (1MF standing for "1 more flop"!)

Vomitory - Raped In Their Own Blood

The 1996 debut album of these long running Swedish death machines shows only glimpses of what was to come in their later works. Plenty of potential for sure, but a rough and ready version of the audio carnage which was to spill in the years afterwards. Also, the bonus of inadvertently comical cover art is always nice - haha. This is an original 1996 pressing on The Plague records.

Augury - Concealed

Not exactly the hardest album to find at all, but this is the original 2004 pressing on Galy Records of these Canadian progressive death metal crazies. This was out of print for a while, until it was re-issued by another label in 2011 in Digipak format after many fans had been paying over the odds on eBay when their 2nd album from 2009 started to get really popular, and people began to realise that the debut was tough to source at a good price. Anyhow, if on here for nothing but posteritys sake, here it is - the first press. A great album, not for the death metal purist though (operatic vocals and tons of outlandish shit!).
