Welcome to Source of Steel - The Heavy Metal Museum. For the metal head who likes to own or collect physical CDs, Source of Steel is my website dedicated to the love of physical metal on shiny plastic discs. Micro-reviews, thoughts, pics of my own collection and random utterances galore. The site started out purely as a way of sharing my rarities to like-minded fans, but now (for longevity's sake more than anything) it is open to new physical metal music bits I've picked up, including new releases and other random shit.

Mystik - The Plot Sickens

Some good Power/Thrash here in the debut album from Ohio's Mystik. Looked for this album for a long, long time, and finally managed to come across it a few months back for a bargain price. One of the earliest releases on longtime metal label Massacre Records. An original pressing from 1992.

Ceremony - Tyranny from Above

Similarly to the Dissect album, this was the only full length album release from Dutch death metallers Ceremony. An original pressing on Cyber Music, again, same as Dissect. Cyber Music did some great stuff, and this was one of the best put out by the label.

Dissect - Swallow Swouming Mass

The one and only full length album from Dutch death metal crew Dissect. I'm still not sure what "Swouming" is meant to mean, but I've always presumed it was the poor grasp of the English language from the band, instead meaning 'Swarming". That is, unless it's actually Dutch. Who knows. Anyway, check it out - great old school death metal. An original press on Cyber Music.

Tiamat - Sumerian Cry

The debut album from Sweden's infamous Tiamat, as an early original pressing on CD by Metalcore Records (the first press was actually release in a limitation of 1,500 units on C.M.F.T. Productions). Gotta love the original artwork, which was only added back in with recent represses. This should really need no introduction or explanation, so I'll leave it at that.

Godkiller - The Rebirth of the Middle Ages

Monaco's Godkiller played quite a varied range between releases, and this, their first major E.P was released during their black metal era. Pretty good stuff, and hard to find these days in this original pressing on Avantgarde Records offshoot label Wounded Love.

Masacre - Requiem

The debut album from Columbia's Masacre, in an original pressing on Osmose Records. This was re-issued by the band themselves in 2004, but is too now also out of print. Great blasting death metal.

Captor - Lay It To Rest

Lay It To Rest was the debut (and only worthwhile, in my opinion) album from Sweden's Captor. Their later stuff was groove metal turdo hell, but this had some pretty decent thrashing death metal on it. An original pressing on Euro Records.

Gravewürm - Ancient Storms of War

An early Barbarian Wrath fixture, Gravewürm were a gnarled, angry machine. This is their debut album, and my favourite release of theirs out of the 3 that I've heard. Limited to 666 hand numbered copies.

Mercyless - Abject Offerings / Coloured Funeral

The debut and sophomore albums from Mercyless, the French death metal band. They kinda went off the rails after these albums, going into the weird/unlistenable world for their 3rd album 'Cold', but here the formula is pretty meaty, crunchy death metal. Well worth checking out. 'Abject Offerings' on Restless Records, and 'Coloured Funeral' is on Century Media.

Gardenian - Two Feet Stand

Gardenian's debut album is the only album I enjoy by the band. Their Gothenburg style was already pretty diluted due to the glut of bands releasing albums in a similar style by the time this hit the shelves in 1997, but, there's enough quality and catchiness here to carry it through. An original pressing on Listenable.
